Office plants provide an opportunity for a company to showcase to its customers, and most importantly its own employees, that business is good. Including indoor plants within the design realm of your office will enhance the company image, and exude a welcoming atmosphere of collaboration and prosperity.
A Letter from Riley Baalhorn, our Interior Landscaping Division Manager:
Indoor plants provide health benefits that can’t be obtained by anything else on the planet. They reduce levels of carbon monoxide, air pollutants, and dust particulates, while increasing humidity by up to 10%. The latter point being especially important considering Colorado’s dry, arid weather. Plants take in carbon dioxide (along with the other aforementioned air pollutants), and convert it to oxygen, which is the opposite of what we do when we breathe. In a sense, you could say that they are continuously recycling and cleaning the air for us. This most certainly leads to improved lung health, which is especially valuable given the state of our current global climate.
A few fun facts regarding plants and the healing and cleaning qualities they possess:
Aloe vera, known to heal cuts, burns, and infections, can also help to diminish asthma symptoms by boiling the leaves in water, and breathing in the vapors.
Other commonly used indoor plants, including – Spider plant (chlorophytum comosum), Rubber tree (Ficus elastic), and Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), have been studied by NASA – and have proven to reduce common VOC’s from the air such as benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and xylene. All of which are airborne chemicals that I promise you our bodies do not appreciate. These volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) are found in items that every office has, such as furniture, carpet, and appliances.
I call it the ‘2 second reset button’. It’s the thought-provoking, positive feeling we get when our focus is shifted from the stress of our daily routine, through the subtle distraction created by the lively beauty of a nearby indoor plant. Even if just for a second or two, it works. The interaction is generally accompanied with a productive deep-breath, and follows with a clearer mind, allowing us to jump back over and attack the task at hand.
Multiple studies have proven that indoor plants promote positivity and increase thought provocation, which leads to better productivity, and therefore reduces stress in workplace settings.
There is no secret why plants are frequently delivered as gifts or get-well tokens. They increase our sense of comfort, security, and decrease depression. It makes a person feel at ease to know another living and breathing thing is next to them. After all, it wasn’t until the recent modern age that humans were stuck inside most of their lives, before that, we were all outside living amongst the foliage.
